In the red corner is the bag filter, often used in HVAC systems as well as industrial, commercial and residential applications. The bag filter is made up of cylindrical bags or tubes generally made of woven or felted fabric, which is the filter medium. In the blue corner is the cartridge filter, which is also used in an array of industries. It is made up of tubular filtration that is encased within a housing or casing. The filters can be made from a variety of materials, depending on the application.
Both bag filters and cartridge filters are considered mechanical filters. That is, the filters mechanically trap small particles, separating them from the gaseous stream. Furthermore, they can both be used to provide superficial filtration, which blocks the particles on the surface of the filter, or deep filtration, which allows the particles to penetrate the filter.
